Ultra-refined follicular unit grafting (URFUG)

Experienced. Expert. Ethical.

How every graft is examined and refined under microscopes, for FUE, FUT and combination

Hair transplantation has gained acceptance because newer techniques and equipment give natural-looking results. In URFUG, each follicular unit is divided into a much smaller, refined graft under microscopes and implanted into a very small incision, so grafts can be densely packed in the original hair pattern.

Step by step

How URFUG works

Irrespective of the technique, every graft goes through the same steps under magnification.

  1. Taking the grafts under magnification

FUE grafts are extracted with 8× Zeiss magnification loupes. In FUT, the donor strip is slivered lengthwise under the Mantis microscope.
  2. Examining every graft

Irrespective of the technique, every graft is examined under the Mantis microscope.
  3. Refining under stereo microscopes

Excess tissue around each follicular unit is separated under Zeiss stereo microscopes, leaving a small, ultra-refined graft.
  4. Keeping grafts healthy outside the body

PRP is used to support the survival of the grafts while they are out of the body, without changing their normal nutrition.
  5. Implanting into very small incisions

The refined grafts are placed into very small incisions of 0.7 to 0.9 mm in the recipient area, so they can be densely packed.

FUE, FUT and combination

The same standard for every technique

URFUG is not a separate operation. It is how grafts are prepared in every hair transplant at Dr. Madhu's.

FUE

Extracted one by one with 8× Zeiss loupes, then examined and refined under the microscopes.

About FUE

FUT

The strip is slivered under the Mantis microscope and each unit refined under Zeiss stereo microscopes.

About FUT

Combination (FUE + FUT)

Grafts from both techniques go through the same examination and refinement in one session.

About combination

Why it matters

What refined grafts do for your result

Grafts fit for dense packing

Small, refined grafts sit close together, so dense packing is possible and the result follows the original hair pattern.

Fewer transected grafts

Working under magnification at every step keeps graft transection (cutting through follicles) to a minimum.

Better graft survival

Careful handling and PRP support while the grafts are out of the body help more of them survive.

No graft trauma

Grafts are handled gently and kept healthy from extraction to implantation, so they are not traumatised.

Equipment

What we use

Dr. Pathuri Madhu was the first in India to practise ultra-refined follicular unit grafting, and he trained the team at the centre in it.

Questions

URFUG: frequently asked questions

What is ultra-refined follicular unit grafting (URFUG)?

URFUG is the way grafts are prepared at Dr. Madhu's: each follicular unit is examined under the Mantis microscope and refined under Zeiss stereo microscopes, so it is small enough for very small incisions and dense packing.

Is URFUG only used with FUT?

No. Irrespective of the technique, FUE, FUT or combination, every graft is examined and refined under the microscopes. FUE grafts are extracted with 8× Zeiss magnification loupes.

Why are the grafts kept in PRP?

PRP is used to support the survival of the grafts while they are out of the body, without changing their normal nutrition.

How does URFUG improve the result?

Refined grafts allow dense packing for a natural result, graft transection is kept to a minimum, graft trauma is prevented and graft survival is improved.
