Safety and pain
Is a hair transplant safe?
Yes. The procedure is shallow and involves only the skin of the scalp, so serious complications are rare. This is the same for FUE, FUT and combination procedures. The centre has the equipment and staff trained in ACLS and BLS to handle any problem.
Is a hair transplant painful?
There is minimal pain. You feel brief, tolerable pain only while the local anaesthetic is injected. The area then goes numb, and pain-reducing methods are used throughout, whether you are having FUE, FUT or a combination procedure. Many patients relax, watch TV or listen to music during the procedure.
Are there any major complications after a hair transplant?
They are uncommon, because nerves, large blood vessels and deeper structures are not involved. Some patients get temporary swelling of the forehead or face, which settles without medicine. Small pimple-like spots occasionally appear in the grafted area and usually clear by themselves.
Can a hair transplant affect the brain?
No. Only the superficial layers of the scalp are involved, not the skull or anything deeper, so a hair transplant has no effect on the brain or the mind.
The procedure: FUE, FUT and combination
Should I choose FUE, FUT or a combination hair transplant?
It depends on the size of your bald area and your donor hair. The doctor decides with you at consultation.
- FUE: suits smaller areas, and patients who want to avoid a linear scar or keep their hair very short.
- FUT: the strip method, suits larger areas because more grafts can be moved in one session (a standard session yields 2,500 to 3,000 grafts).
- Combination (FUE + FUT): for advanced baldness: FUT gives the core volume and FUE adds grafts from the surrounding donor zones, so a single day can give 5,000 to 8,000 grafts.

How long will I stay at the centre on the day of surgery?
All three are day-care procedures. Surgery takes 6 to 8 hours, and even a large combination session of 8,000 grafts is completed within 8 hours. You can leave about an hour after the procedure, and you come back the next day for a complimentary follow-up shampoo.
Do you shave my head for a hair transplant?
Not necessarily, and the choice is yours.
- FUE: the donor area is usually trimmed short. FUE can also be done without shaving, which costs more.
- FUT: the donor area is not shaved. Only a very narrow band of hair is trimmed where the strip is taken, and the surrounding hair falls over it.
- Combination (FUE + FUT): the FUT strip needs only a narrow trimmed band; the FUE zones around it are trimmed unless the procedure is done unshaven.
Without shaving, your appearance changes little, and from day 2 others usually cannot easily tell. See long hair (no-shave) transplant.
What is ultra-refined follicular unit grafting?
Irrespective of the technique, every graft is examined under the Mantis microscope and excess tissue is separated under Zeiss stereo microscopes. FUE grafts are extracted with 8× Zeiss loupes; FUT strips are slivered under the Mantis microscope. PRP supports the grafts while they are out of the body. The refined grafts go into slits of 0.7 mm to 0.9 mm for dense packing. See URFUG.
What are the benefits of the latest techniques?
Ultra-refined follicular unit grafting gives hair that looks more natural after it grows, and is hard to tell apart from your own hair.
How is the older method different from today's?
Older surgery used large plug grafts, which are now obsolete and were visible in the results. Today hair is moved as natural follicular units, by FUE, FUT or both, so the surgeon's technique and technology matter.
What is the difference between a hair follicle and a follicular unit?
A follicle holds one hair. A follicular unit is a natural group of 1 to 4 hairs; a unit with more than 2 hairs is a multi-follicular unit. The centre charges per graft (follicular unit), not per hair. About 3,000 follicular units usually contain 5,000 to 6,000 hairs.
Is there such a thing as scarless hair transplant surgery?
No. FUE is sometimes advertised as scarless, but it is better called scalpel-free: it avoids a linear scar, but leaves small dot-like marks across the donor area. FUT leaves a fine linear scar, and a combination procedure leaves both, though the FUT scar is often finer because less tension is placed on the scalp.
Session sizes and density
What is a mega session?
Transplanting 2,500 grafts in one session. See mega, super mega and giga sessions.
What is a super mega session?
Transplanting 4,000 grafts in one session.
What is a giga session?
Transplanting more than 4,000 grafts in one session, usually as a combination FUE and FUT procedure.
What is dense packing?
Placing many grafts close together in each square centimetre for density. The centre places 25 to 40 grafts per square centimetre, depending on the grafts and the scalp. See dense packing.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually 1 to 3, depending on the size of the bald area and the quantity and quality of donor hair. A combination session can often cover a large area in one day.
Cost
How much does a hair transplant cost?
The cost depends on the number of grafts and the technique, priced per graft:
- FUE: ₹75 + GST per graft
- FUT: ₹60 + GST per graft
- Combination (FUE + FUT): ₹60 + GST per FUT graft and ₹75 + GST per FUE graft
See hair transplant cost in Hyderabad and the graft calculator.
Recovery and results
Do hair transplants really work?
Yes. It is a proven surgery: the transplanted hair grows, can be cut, and grows back even after a clean shave. How full it looks depends on the number of grafts, and the centre aims for natural results.
How long does it take for the hair to grow fully?
The timeline is the same for FUE, FUT and combination procedures. The transplanted hair usually sheds in the first few weeks. The result starts to look moderately full around months 4 to 6, and the final result is visible around months 8 to 12, as the hair thickens to match your natural hair.
Can I cut my hair after it grows back?
Yes. Cut it as you would your natural hair.
Will the surgery leave a big scar in the donor area?
Most patients have only a fine scar or small marks.
- FUE: there is no linear scar, only tiny dot-like marks that are hidden once the hair grows a few millimetres.
- FUT: the centre uses trichophytic closure, so hair grows through the healed line and the scar is usually a fine, pale line.
- Combination (FUE + FUT): a fine FUT line and FUE dot marks; the FUT scar is often finer because less tension is placed on the scalp.
People who tend to form keloids may have a more noticeable scar, so the doctor asks how earlier wounds have healed.
Is the transplanted hair permanent?
Yes, in most patients. It comes from the donor area, which usually resists balding, and it keeps behaving like that donor hair, whichever technique was used to take it.
What affects the result of a hair transplant?
- The number of grafts available from the donor area
- Donor hair quality: thickness, curl, and hair-to-skin colour contrast
- Placement in the natural direction of growth, and the density of placement
- The size of the bald area compared with the donor density (a smaller area and a denser donor area give better results)
- The skill of the surgeon and team, and the length of the procedure
- Personal factors: long-term sun damage, smoking and some medicines
Is there an age limit for a hair transplant?
There is no upper limit if you are medically fit; even people in their 80s can consider it. The lower limit depends on the doctor's judgement and your wishes. See am I a good candidate?
Before and after surgery
How long should my hair be before surgery?
At least 1 inch.
Is the dressing after surgery uncomfortable?
No. It is minimal: a tennis-style headband that reduces swelling, and a surgical cap to wear for 3 days.
Can I drive home after the procedure?
No. For safety, do not drive yourself home.
What should I avoid straight after surgery?
Driving yourself, touching or scratching the transplanted area, and removing the headband for 72 hours. Stay indoors for 24 hours after surgery.
When can I go back to work?
On day 1 if you work from home, or day 4 if you go to an office.
- FUE: there are no stitches to remove.
- FUT: donor stitches are usually removed after about 10 to 14 days.
- Combination (FUE + FUT): the strip stitches are usually removed after about 10 to 14 days.
Will I need medicines after surgery?
The transplanted hair needs no medicine. Antibiotics for 7 days (to prevent infection) and painkillers for 4 days are given free. Medicines to keep your existing hair are optional, your choice, and should be taken under a doctor's supervision.
When can I trim my hair?
After 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the method.
When can I exercise or swim?
Light activity from day 5, jogging and running from day 15, the gym from day 20, and swimming after 1 month.
Do I need special oils or shampoos?
No. Oils condition and shampoos cleanse, but neither makes hair grow. Use an antiseptic shampoo for 2 days before surgery.
How often do I come back for follow-up?
A follow-up at least once a year is advised but not compulsory. Come back whenever you or the doctor feel it is needed, and call +91 90004 11511 with any questions.
Will there be much bleeding?
No. Careful technique controls bleeding in FUE, FUT and combination procedures. Bleeding-time and clotting-time tests before surgery identify any bleeding tendency, so precautions can be taken or surgery advised against.
What about swelling or infection?
Swelling of the forehead is harmless and usually settles within 2 to 3 days without medicine; the headband helps. Infection is uncommon, because sterilisation is followed before and during surgery and antibiotics are given afterwards.
Can there be other complications?
People who tend to form keloids (thick, raised scars) may develop one, so the doctor asks how earlier wounds have healed. After FUT or a combination procedure, some discomfort from the donor stitches for a few days is common and settles on its own; after FUE there are no stitches.
Choosing a clinic
How can I compare the quality of hair transplants?
Look at how natural the hairline is, how the grafts are placed and angled, the number of grafts per square centimetre, and the donor area (a fine line after FUT, tiny dot marks after FUE). See how to judge the quality of a hair transplant.
Some companies say they offer the greatest technique. Is it true?
Be cautious. Companies often try to stand out to attract patients, and some claim special or patented tools. Check the surgeon's credentials and the real results yourself, and compare prices on the cost page.
Other conditions and treatments
Can I get a hair transplant if I have dandruff?
Yes, but active dandruff or scalp inflammation must be examined and controlled first, because a calm scalp supports healing and graft survival. See dandruff treatment.
Can a hair transplant treat scarring alopecia?
Only in selected cases where the underlying inflammation has stayed fully stable for a long time. See scarring alopecia treatment.
Do laser combs help hair growth?
They may stimulate growth slightly while you use them, but the effect stops when you stop.
What about hair cloning?
It is still being researched and is not available as a treatment.
How does laser hair reduction work?
For removing unwanted hair, the triple-wavelength diode laser (Alma Soprano Titanium) targets active follicles to weaken the roots, and is safe for Indian skin types. See laser hair reduction.
Consultation and travel
Should I have a personal or an online consultation?
In person is better: the doctor can examine your scalp, rule out other causes, assess your donor hair for FUE or FUT, and discuss your hairline and expectations. An online consultation is a good first step if you live far away.
Do you help with accommodation?
Yes. The centre can guide you to hotels within walking distance. See where to stay and international patients.
