What treatment aims to do

Two goals for every patient

Stop further hair loss

Slow or halt the thinning process so you keep the hair you have.

Stimulate regrowth

Strengthen weakened follicles so thinning hair grows thicker and fuller.

At your first consultation, our doctors assess how well you are likely to respond. Where medicines alone are unlikely to help enough, we will discuss whether a hair transplant suits you.

Diagnosis first

Hair loss is a symptom, not one disease

Different causes need different treatments, and some types of hair loss do not respond to pattern-baldness medicines at all. These are the causes we most often diagnose and treat.

Male and female pattern hair lossAndrogenetic alopecia, the most common cause, driven by genetics and the effect of male hormones on sensitive follicles.
Telogen effluviumDiffuse shedding after illness, high fever, surgery, childbirth, crash dieting, severe stress or certain medicines.
Alopecia areataAn autoimmune condition causing round, patchy bald spots on the scalp, beard or eyebrows. Alopecia areata treatment
Nutritional and medical causesIron deficiency, thyroid disorders, low vitamin D or B12, protein deficiency, and hormonal conditions such as PCOS.
Traction alopeciaHair loss from tight hairstyles, braids or extensions worn over long periods.
Scarring alopeciasLess common conditions that permanently destroy follicles and need early specialist treatment.
Scalp conditionsSeborrhoeic dermatitis (dandruff) and fungal infections, which can worsen shedding. Dandruff treatment

Your assessment

How we evaluate your hair loss

An accurate diagnosis tells us not only what is causing your hair loss, but also how well you are likely to respond to each treatment. Depending on your condition, your evaluation may include the steps shown here.

Standardised photographs taken at your first visit let us measure your progress objectively at every follow-up.

  1. A detailed history of your hair loss, family history, health, diet and medicines
  2. Scalp and hair examination, including trichoscopy, a magnified examination of the scalp and follicles
  3. A hair pull test to assess active shedding
  4. Blood tests where needed: haemoglobin, ferritin, thyroid function, vitamin D and B12, and hormone tests for women with signs of hormonal imbalance
  5. A scalp biopsy in selected cases where the diagnosis is uncertain
  6. Standardised photographs to track your results

For men

Medical treatment for male pattern baldness

Treatment is chosen after your evaluation and reviewed at each follow-up.

Finasteride (oral)

US FDA-approved

A daily 1 mg tablet that treats the hormonal cause of male pattern baldness by lowering DHT, the hormone that shrinks sensitive follicles. In most men it slows or stops further loss, and many see some regrowth, especially on the crown.

A small number of men may notice reduced libido or sexual side effects, and mood changes have been reported. Your doctor will discuss these before you start. Women who are or may become pregnant should not handle broken tablets.

Topical minoxidil

US FDA-approved

A solution or foam, commonly 5% for men, applied to the scalp usually twice daily. It prolongs the growth phase of hair and enlarges thinning follicles. It works best for early to moderate thinning and must be used consistently.

Low-dose oral minoxidil

Off-label, doctor-supervised

An option for men who find topical application difficult or irritating. It is not FDA-approved for hair loss and is prescribed only after evaluation, because it can affect blood pressure and heart rate and may cause unwanted body hair.

Dutasteride

Off-label, selected cases

A stronger DHT-blocking medicine, taken orally or given as scalp injections, that may be considered for men who do not respond well enough to finasteride.

Supportive care

Alongside main treatment

Medicated shampoos such as ketoconazole, treatment of dandruff, and correction of any deficiency found on your blood tests.

For women

Medical treatment for female pattern hair loss

Women usually notice diffuse thinning over the top of the scalp or a widening parting, and hormonal, nutritional and thyroid factors are more often involved. Treatment is planned accordingly.

Topical minoxidil

US FDA-approved

The only FDA-approved medicine for female pattern hair loss, and the foundation of treatment. Available as 2% solution, usually applied twice daily, or 5% foam, usually once daily. It helps slow thinning and regrow hair.

Not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Spironolactone and anti-androgens

Off-label, monitored

For women whose hair loss is linked to hormonal factors, such as PCOS, acne or excess facial hair. These medicines can help halt thinning.

Requires monitoring, including potassium levels where appropriate. Must not be taken during pregnancy, so reliable contraception is advised.

Low-dose oral minoxidil

Off-label, doctor-supervised

May be prescribed for selected women under medical supervision, particularly when topical treatment is not tolerated.

Correcting underlying causes

Essential for many women

Low iron stores, thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies and hormonal imbalance are common contributors. We treat these, coordinating with your gynaecologist, endocrinologist or physician where needed.

For men and women

Advanced clinical and adjunct therapies, including PRP

These in-clinic treatments work best alongside your medical plan rather than in place of it.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)A small amount of your own blood is processed to concentrate the platelets, then injected into thinning areas. Growth factors from the platelets may help stimulate weakened follicles. Studies are encouraging, especially combined with medical treatment, though response varies. MicroneedlingControlled microneedling of the scalp, alone or with minoxidil or PRP, may improve treatment response in selected patients.
Low-level laser therapyFDA-cleared, non-invasive caps, helmets or combs for hereditary hair loss. They can improve hair density and are best used with medical treatment.
Corticosteroid injectionsA well-established first-line treatment for alopecia areata. Small injections into the patches calm the immune attack and encourage regrowth, usually repeated every four to six weeks.
Treatment for severe alopecia areataFor extensive alopecia areata, newer oral medicines called JAK inhibitors are approved in several countries. Our doctors will advise whether these or other treatments suit you.

Medical or surgical?

Medical treatment or hair transplant?

Medicines work best on hair that is thinning but still present. They cannot bring back follicles that have been lost completely. A hair transplant moves healthy, DHT-resistant follicles from the back and sides of the scalp to bald or thin areas.

For many patients the best result comes from combining both: medical treatment to protect existing hair, and a transplant to restore areas medicines cannot reach. We will give you an honest recommendation based on your examination.

Important: treatment after a hair transplant

Surgery is not the final step. Transplanted hair is generally resistant to balding, but the natural process continues in your non-transplanted native hair. Without treatment, that surrounding hair may keep thinning, which can leave the transplanted area looking isolated.

To keep your natural hair, protect your investment and get the best long-term result, we strongly advise continuing medical treatment after your transplant, as your doctor recommends.

Your timeline

What to expect from hair regrowth treatment

Hair grows slowly, so patience and consistency matter more than anything else. Every patient responds differently.

  1. Weeks 2 to 8Possible early sheddingSome people shed more when starting minoxidil. This is usually temporary, as old hairs make way for new growth.
  2. Months 3 to 6First visible changeShedding slows and most people begin to see a noticeable difference.
  3. Month 12Full benefitThe full effect of treatment is usually seen by around one year, measured against your first photographs.
  4. OngoingMaintenancePattern hair loss is long-term. Continued treatment keeps the benefit; stopping usually means losing it over the following months.

Questions

Hair loss treatment in Hyderabad: frequently asked questions

Will I have to use these medicines forever?

For pattern hair loss, continued treatment is generally needed to keep the results, though your doctor may simplify your regimen over time. Causes such as telogen effluvium or a nutritional deficiency often need only short-term treatment once corrected.

Are these medicines safe?

The medicines we use are well studied and widely prescribed. Like all medicines, they can cause side effects in some people, which is why we prescribe them only after a consultation and monitor you at follow-up. Tell your doctor about other conditions, medicines, pregnancy or plans for pregnancy.

Can I just buy minoxidil or supplements myself?

Self-treatment often misses the actual cause. A proper diagnosis makes sure you use the right treatment and don’t overlook a treatable condition such as thyroid disease or iron deficiency. Supplements, including biotin, help mainly when there is a genuine deficiency, and high-dose biotin can interfere with some blood test results, so we recommend them only when your tests show a need.

Does PRP hair treatment work on its own?

PRP is not a stand-alone treatment. Growth factors from your platelets may help stimulate weakened follicles, and it works best combined with your medical treatment. At our Jubilee Hills centre, PRP costs ₹4,000 per session, including GST.
