Medically fit for surgery
A hair transplant is advisable only when you are medically fit for surgery. Age on its own is not the deciding factor.
Hair transplant suitability · Hyderabad
Experienced. Expert. Ethical.
Not everyone with hair loss is suitable for a hair transplant
A good candidate is medically fit and has a good donor area, because the quality of the donor area decides the outcome.
At Dr. Madhu's Advanced Hair Transplant Centre in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, suitability is checked at every consultation: your general health, the stage of your hair loss and your donor area. If a transplant is not the right answer yet, we will tell you, and explain what is.
At a glance
A hair transplant is advisable only when you are medically fit for surgery. Age on its own is not the deciding factor.
Young patients with early baldness are often better served by medical treatment first. A transplant is planned when it will give a lasting benefit.
The back and sides of the head supply every graft, so the quality of the donor area decides the outcome.
Honest advice
Young patients in the early stages of baldness can often be treated with medical treatment to prevent further hair loss and, to some extent, to help hair grow.
Sometimes a transplant is recommended even for younger people, based on personal and social reasons such as an upcoming marriage or depression. The decision is made with you at consultation, never on a sales pitch.
Early hair loss?
Start with hair loss treatment without surgery. PRP and GFC can be added to ongoing treatment.
Age and general health
A hair transplant is advisable only when you are medically fit for surgery. Age is not a bar: a transplant can be done even at the age of 70, provided you are surgically fit.
Before surgery, the doctor checks your general health and any conditions or medicines that affect healing.

The donor area
Transplanted hair keeps behaving like the hair in the place it was taken from; this is called donor dominance. That is why a good donor area, at the back and sides of the head, is essential for a good result.
The number of follicular units per square centimetre in the donor area.
Thicker hair shafts cover more scalp with each graft.
Curly hair gives better coverage than straight hair.
How loose (lax) the scalp is, which matters most for the FUT strip.
Advanced baldness or a weak donor area? A combination FUE + FUT session takes the most grafts the donor area can safely give, and when the scalp donor area is depleted, beard and body hair transplant can add grafts for the crown.

Questions
Not necessarily, but young patients in the early stages of baldness can often be treated with medical treatment to prevent further hair loss and, to some extent, help hair grow. A transplant is sometimes still recommended for younger people for personal or social reasons, after a consultation.
No. Age is not a bar. A hair transplant can be done even at the age of 70, provided you are medically fit for surgery.
A good donor area at the back and sides of the head has a high density of follicular units per square centimetre, thick hair shafts, ideally curly hair for better coverage, and a loose (lax) scalp. A large donor area compared with the area to be covered also helps.
Your surgeon will tell you honestly what is realistic. Medical treatment may be the better option, and when the scalp donor area is depleted, beard and body hair can sometimes add grafts for the crown.
