The treatment
What is scalp micropigmentation (SMP)?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a medical cosmetic procedure in which specialised micro-needles place tiny dots of customised pigment into the upper dermal layer of the scalp. These dots replicate the appearance of closely shaved hair follicles, or add the look of density to thinning areas.
Unlike a regular tattoo, SMP uses specially formulated pigments and carefully controlled depth, so the dots stay crisp and blend naturally with your existing hair and skin tone.

Who is SMP suitable for?
SMP can be tailored to many stages and types of hair loss, in men and women. It may be a good option for:

Questions
Frequently asked questions about SMP
What is SMP scalp micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical medical cosmetic procedure in which specialised micro-needles place tiny dots of customised pigment into the upper dermal layer of the scalp. The dots replicate the look of closely shaved hair follicles, or add the look of density to thinning areas.
Does SMP hurt?
Most people feel only mild discomfort, often described as a light scratching sensation. A topical numbing cream can be applied if needed, and sensitivity varies from person to person.
How much does SMP cost in Hyderabad?
Cost depends on the area to be covered, the number of sessions and whether you are treating scars or thinning. At Dr. Madhu's Advanced Hair Transplant Centre, Jubilee Hills, treatment typically ranges from ₹30,000 to ₹90,000. A personalised estimate is provided after your evaluation.
Does SMP have side effects?
Side effects are usually mild. Most people have slight redness that settles within a day or two, and only mild discomfort during the session. SMP may not be advised over areas of active alopecia areata or scalp inflammation, which your consultation will check for.
Is SMP the same as a hair tattoo?
No. Unlike a regular tattoo, SMP uses specially formulated pigments and carefully controlled depth, so the dots stay crisp and blend naturally with your existing hair and skin tone.
Is SMP suitable for women?
Yes. For women with diffuse thinning, SMP adds the look of density, for example along the parting, without shaving the head.
Will the pigment fade or change colour?
SMP softens gradually over the years, which is why occasional touch-ups are recommended. Because we use specialised pigments placed at the correct depth, the dots are designed to lighten evenly rather than turn blue or green, as older tattoos sometimes do. Sun protection helps the results last longer.
What is the aftercare after SMP? When can I wash my hair?
Avoid wetting the scalp for about 3 to 4 days after each session. After that, you can wash gently with a mild shampoo. For a few days, also avoid heavy sweating, swimming and direct sun. Your aftercare sheet will give you exact instructions.
Can I grow my hair longer after SMP?
Yes. If SMP is done to add density to thinning hair, it works with your existing hair length. For the shaved-head look, the effect is most convincing when the hair is kept closely buzzed.
Can SMP be combined with a hair transplant?
Yes. SMP can add the look of extra density to transplanted areas or cover donor-area scars. It is usually done once the scalp has fully healed after surgery, and your surgeon will advise on the right timing.
Is SMP permanent? Can it be removed?
SMP is long-lasting but fades gradually over time. If ever needed, it can be lightened or removed with laser treatment.
