The recipient area in hair transplant

Experienced. Expert. Ethical.

How the bald area is measured, how density is planned, and when a second session may be needed

The recipient area is the part of the scalp that has lost hair and needs transplanting. Its size decides how many grafts are needed and whether more than one session is required.

Planning density

How the bald area is measured

The outcome depends largely on the size of the bald area and how well it is covered. A larger area needs more grafts.

Square centimetresthe bald area is measured in sq cm
25 to 40 graftsplaced per sq cm, depending on the grafts and the scalp
3,000 graftsan average session, covering about 75 to 120 sq cm

Grafts are placed at 25 to 40 per square centimetre, depending on the grafts and the scalp, and the surgeon decides the density for each patient. Less than 25 may look sparse. Read more about dense packing.

Sessions

When more than one session is needed

If the recipient area is very large, the donor area may not supply enough grafts in one session. A second session may be needed, and a third for very large areas.

Large areas in a single day

Hair transplantation has advanced to such a stage that large areas (Norwood grades V, VI and VII) can be covered in a single day, within 6 to 8 hours. Rarely, a large session is split over two consecutive days.

A second session for density

Some patients still have a lot of existing hair at the first session, which may be lost in later years. In those cases a second session, and very rarely a third, may be needed to improve density.

Large single-day sessions are usually done as a combination FUE and FUT session at Dr. Madhu's in Jubilee Hills. See the Norwood grades and graft counts on the cost page.

Questions

The recipient area: frequently asked questions

What is the recipient area in a hair transplant?

The recipient area is the part of the scalp that has lost hair and needs transplanting. Its size decides how many grafts are needed and whether more than one session is required.

How many grafts per square centimetre are transplanted?

Usually 25 to 40 grafts per square centimetre, depending on the grafts and the scalp. The surgeon decides the density for each patient; fewer than 25 may look sparse.

How much area does a 3,000 graft session cover?

At 25 to 40 grafts per square centimetre, an average session of 3,000 grafts covers about 75 to 120 square centimetres, depending on the density chosen.

Will I need a second hair transplant session?

Not always. If the bald area is very large, or if existing hair is lost in later years, a second session (and very rarely a third) may be needed to improve density.
