What to look for after full regrowth, during the operation and immediately after surgery
Anyone can judge the quality of a hair transplant once the hair has fully grown. Some signs of quality are also visible during the operation and immediately after it, and they tell you a lot about the surgeon and the team, whether you are having an FUE, FUT or combination hair transplant.

Stage 1
Once the new hair has grown, check five things:
The transplanted hair should not look like grafts at all.
How full the new hair looks compared with your existing hair.
A hairline that suits your face and age.
How completely the bald area has been covered.
How easy the donor area is to spot: a fine line after FUT, or tiny dot-like marks after FUE.
When to judge. Whether you had FUE or FUT, the result starts to look moderately full around months 4 to 6, and the final result is visible around months 8 to 12. In a good result, the new hair grows in the same direction as your original hair, so it is hard to tell you have had surgery.
Stage 2
These points are easier for surgeons and doctors to notice, but you and your attendants can ask about each of them.
Stage 3
Measured as follicular units per square centimetre.
How many grafts were placed in the session, and over how much of the scalp.
The skin between the transplanted grafts should look healthy.
During or after surgery, with local anaesthesia.
Each graft placed at the angle of the existing hair.
Only a light dressing should be needed.

A quality hair transplant surgeon is happy for you to check the work. At Dr. Madhu's Advanced Hair Transplant Centre, these standards are part of every procedure:
Grafts are sorted into trays of exactly 20, so you and your attendants can verify the count before implantation.
Under high-powered Zeiss and Mantis microscopes, FUT strips are dissected into follicular units of 1 to 4 hairs and FUE grafts are checked before implantation.
FUT: a trichophytic closure lets hair grow through the healed line. FUE: fine punches leave tiny dot-like marks that hide once the hair grows.
Every case, FUE, FUT or combination, is planned and led by an ABHRS-certified surgeon, Dr. Pathuri Madhu or Dr. P. Ram Sushruth.
Meet Dr. Pathuri Madhu (31 years in hair restoration) and Dr. P. Ram Sushruth (7 years in hair restoration), both Diplomates of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery.

Questions
With FUE or FUT, the result starts to look moderately full around months 4 to 6, and the final result is visible around months 8 to 12. That is when naturalness, density, hairline design, coverage and the donor scar can all be judged.
With FUT, a trichophytic closure lets hair grow through the healed line, so in most patients the scar is a fine, pale line. With FUE, the donor area has tiny dot-like marks that are hidden once the hair grows out a few millimetres.
Ask how the grafts are counted. At Dr. Madhu's, grafts are sorted into trays of exactly 20, so you and your attendants can verify the count before implantation.
You are awake and comfortable, the operating area is clean with little blood loss, donor scarring is kept to a minimum (a trichophytic closure after FUT, fine punches with FUE), grafts are handled under stereo microscopes, incisions are small (0.7 mm to 0.9 mm), sterilisation protocols are followed, and several qualified doctors are on the team.
