Dense packing in hair transplant

Experienced. Expert. Ethical.

How many grafts fit in each square centimetre, and what makes it possible with FUE, FUT and combination

Dense packing means transplanting a large number of follicular units close together in each square centimetre. It gives density to the transplanted hair and a more natural appearance.

Density

How dense packing works

A normal scalp has many follicular units in every square centimetre (70 to 120 follicular units). A transplant cannot match that, so the aim is to place grafts densely enough to look natural.

Natural scalp

70 to 120 follicular units per sq cm

Dense-packed transplant

25 to 40 grafts per sq cm

Each square shows one square centimetre of scalp (drawing, not to exact scale).

Grafts are placed at 25 to 40 grafts per square centimetre, depending on the grafts and the scalp, and the surgeon decides the density for each patient. Less than 25 may look sparse. See how the bald area is measured on the recipient area page.

Technique

What makes it possible

Three things allow many grafts to sit close together in each square centimetre.

Ultra-refined grafts

Dense packing needs grafts made ultra-refined under microscopes (URFUG), so that each graft is small enough to sit close to the next.

Micro-blades and sapphire blades

Very small slits, 0.7 mm to 0.9 mm, are made with micro-blades and sapphire blades, so that many grafts fit close together.

Natural direction of growth

Grafts are placed in the natural direction of hair growth, so that the density looks natural and not crowded.

FUE, FUT and combination

Dense packing with every technique

Dense packing is about how the grafts are placed in the recipient area, so it is used with FUE, FUT and combination. What differs is how the grafts are taken from the donor area.

FUE

Grafts are taken one by one from the donor area with fine punches of 0.7 mm to 1.0 mm, then placed densely through the same small slits.

About FUE hair transplant

FUT

A strip of scalp is taken from the donor area and dissected into ultra-refined grafts under stereo microscopes, giving a high yield of grafts for dense placement.

About FUT hair transplant

Combination (FUE + FUT)

FUT and FUE in a single session, for large bald areas that need more grafts than one technique can give, so that dense packing can cover a larger area.

About combination hair transplant

Large single-day sessions are usually done as a combination FUE and FUT session at Dr. Madhu's in Jubilee Hills. See the per-graft prices for each technique.

Questions

Dense packing: frequently asked questions

Can a hair transplant match natural hair density?

No. A normal scalp has 70 to 120 follicular units in every square centimetre, and a transplant cannot match that. The aim is to place grafts densely enough to look natural.

How is the density decided?

The surgeon decides the density for each patient: 25 to 40 grafts per square centimetre, depending on the grafts and the scalp. Less than 25 may look sparse.

Is dense packing done with FUE, FUT and combination?

Yes. Dense packing is about how the grafts are placed in the recipient area, so it is used with FUE, FUT and combination. Only the way the grafts are taken from the donor area differs.

How small are the slits for dense packing?

The slits are 0.7 mm to 0.9 mm, made with micro-blades and sapphire blades. Small slits allow many grafts to fit close together.
